Alexander enjoyed a busy festive period, with a series of sold out concerts in Canada, Germany and Ireland.

On December 20th Alexander and the National Arts Centre Orchestra premiered Anne Dudley’s “The Man with the Violin” featuring violin virtuoso Joshua Bell. The work, an NAC co-commission with Washington’s Kennedy Centre, sets to music and animation Bell’s experience busking in the New York subway. Two days later Alexander conducted the NAC Orchestra’s annual performance Handel’s Messiah, this time with a slight twist: for the first time in NAC history, Mozart’s 1789 arrangement Handel’s music was used.

Flying back to Europe via his home in London, where he celebrated on Christmas Day, Alexander continued on to Germany to rehearse for the New Year’s Eve and New Years Day concerts at Berlin’s Konzerthaus. He was joined by organist Cameron Carpenter for a programme that was focused around music connected with England – Korngold’s score to ‘Robin Hood’, Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations’ and Handel’s ‘Royal Fireworks Music’, to name just a few. This was Alexander’s third time conducting and presenting these concerts at the Konzerthaus and his fourth year leading New Year’s celebrations in Berlin.

On January 3rd rehearsals began with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin for their ‘American Gala’ featuring music by Ellington, Gershwin, Joplin and Bernstein. Pianist Peter Jablonski was soloist for the concert which took place on January 4th in Dublin’s National Concert Hall. You can watch the concert in full by visiting RTE Lyric fm’s YouTube page here.

Alexander is currently enjoying a few days at home in London before his concert with the English Chamber Orchestra later in the month.
