Sibelius 1 in BambergFebruary 3, 2018
The Sibelius Symphonies have been a recurring theme for Alexander over the last few years. Last season he performed a cycle of the works with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as part of his ‘Symphonic Soundscapes’ series at London’s Cadogan Hall and subsequently the pieces formed the backbone of his ‘Ideas of North’ Festival at the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa at the beginning of this season.
Alexander last week travelled to Germany to record the 1st Symphony with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Written after his early tone poems, and with hints of Tchaikovsky and Borodin pervading the work, the symphony is deeply rooted in the Russian school to which the young Sibelius owed so much and yet also contains many of the unique qualities of his more mature style. The recording for Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Radio) will be available soon… Watch this space!
