This weekend Alexander Shelley continues his fruitful partnership with star-percussionist Martin Grubinger, as they tackle Avner Dorman’s compelling percussion concerto “Frozen in Time” at two subscription concerts at the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg. The work, which consists of three movements inspired by the great prehistoric continents of Indoafrica, Eurasia and the Americas, was premiered by Grubinger in 2008 and has since been a regular staple in his repertoire. The piece will be framed by two of the great symphonies of the 19th century: Schubert’s “Unfinished”—to be proceeded by a minute of silence and to be dedicated to the victims of Japan’s recent natural disasters—will open the evening and will be followed by Brahms’s Third Symphony.
