A very special project begins this week as Alexander and his father Howard begin rehearsals for two concerts with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in which they will perform all four of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos. This will be the first time that Alexander and Howard have performed the cycle together having collaborated only on three previous occasions. In the early 1980s Howard Shelley’s name was closely associated with the music of Rachmaninov – he was the first person to perform the complete solo piano music in recital at Wigmore Hall and made critically acclaimed recordings of all the solo piano music as well as the complete concertos and songs. Tasmania also has a special place in Howard’s heart – he has worked with the orchestra there as conductor and soloist for 30 years unbroken.
The performances will be recorded for broadcast on ABC.
