At 5pm BST on August 26th Alexander Shelley will feature live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune with host Katie Derham.

Alexander will speak about ‘Darlings of the Muses’ his latest release with the NAC Orchestra, the first in a cycle of four double albums. These albums feature the music of Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, interweaving a complete cycle of both Robert and Johannes’s symphonies with music by Clara Schumann, a woman who was so influential in both their lives and whom they admired and respected deeply.

This first double album features Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero, both as soloist in Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto and also as improviser, conjuring up the spirit of the Clara in a series of unique extemporisations. These performances link together the first symphonies of Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms in an exploration of the great artistic triumvirate.

On first hearing Johannes Brahms play, Robert Schumann admiringly dubbed him ‘Darling of the Muses’.
